Jamaica's Family Run Parliament

Image
I have never supported and will never support the take over and control of our Parliament by family members. On principle having too many family members in Parliament undermines our democracy.  There are valid reasons why some corporations have a policy against family members working in the same company. We need legislation in Parliament to prevent a family-controlled parliament, where the nation’s business is being run from the dining rooms and bedrooms of families. Having that many families in parliament, dividing up the power structure among themselves sets a bad precedence and opens the door for corruption.  One must continue to question if the families are making decisions in the Nations interest or in the family’s interest because members of our political class are consumed by greed and their own self-importance. Having a family run government is Monarchial or Feudal in nature, where the family makes decisions in the best interest of the family and then try to convince u...

Jamaica’s Foreign Educated Bubble Headed Technocrats

Image
Jamaica’s Foreign Educated Bubble Headed Technocrats live for disasters. There is nothing like a disaster to bring these idiots out from under their rock. These bubble headed idiots dust off their Sunday best imported suits then start jockeying for position in front of the TV cameras, trying to grab any news headlines they can get. Disaster and human suffering to them is just an opportunity to get in front of the media and sound important. Their chance to impress Jamaica with their advance High Education Lingo. "Well you know, the socio-economic, micro-macro, venture capitalist, policy, Asymmetric shock, yadda, yadda, yadda, blah, blah" Immediately everybody turn professional town and city planners with the techno-jargon to match. They love to declare which foreign university they picked up their degrees from and how they are professionals with zero practical experience. After the recent floods they were all over the TV, Internet and print media, their chance to shine and...

The best-laid plans of mice and Village Idiots often go awry

The 2008 Global Recession In 2008, The International Monetary Fund stated that the drying up of global credit after the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the ensuing Global recession would lead to serious concerns for Jamaica’s economic prospect and the sustainability. They declared that the country’s 1.5 trillion debt would put pressure on the country’s economy and exchange rates. However the then Minister of Finance the Honorable Audley Shaw dismissed the IMF concerns and declared that the Global financial crisis would not have any impact on the Jamaican economy. In fact the Minister of Finance the Honorable Audley Shaw stated that the Global recession would be opportunistic for Jamaica. He declared that, as a result of the recession, the Jamaican economy will grow +2.0% to +3.0% in the next fiscal year, as he moved to downplay concerns of the effects of a global economic slowdown. And in particular, any effects the looming recession in the United States will have on the Jamai...

JLP Government 10 Point Plan and Promises to Prosperity

Image
Plan and Promises Publish Date: Feb 04, 2016 1) We will reform government and establish a Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation. This ministry will ensure that investments are rapidly facilitated to avoid government obstacles, such as one agency giving approval to mine sand for the construction of a hotel and another agency placing a stop order on the activity. That doesn't make any sense. Implementation Start Date: Implementation Status: 2) We will immediately restore the benefits at the Junior Stock Market to grow equity financing for the expansion of small to medium size businesses, as they form the stable base for job creation. Implementation Start Date: Implementation Status: 3) We are committed in principle and practice to real reform of the tax system. This means leaving you with more of your income to save or invest. This means lower taxes and a business friendly tax system. We will again reduce transfer taxes, stamp duties, estate taxes, and as ...

Imports, Financial Crisis, Bailout and Hennessy

Written: 2012 Import and Destroy Kingston-Wharves, Imports Only Wharves- Exports not Allowed!! Some time ago in 2009, the then Minister of Agriculture declared that fertilizer from Jamaican companies was too expensive and as such Jamaica would import/buy fertilizer from American sources.  This to me is a very anti-Jamaica and anti-Jamaican business position for our Government to take because it is not like fertilizer was in short supply and we must increase short term supply to the local market. I do understand the need to keep the agricultural cost of production down and inflation in check. What was missing from the Agriculture Minister was any sort of analysis as to why the local price of fertilizer was so high. We heard nothing about the Ministry trying to engage fertilizer producers, trying to find out why prices were high and how the Government can help to reduce cost and lower the prices to the consumers. There was no long term plan of action. The Government’s position...
