Everyone seems to forget but let me remind you. Jamaica is a developing third world country that is heavily in debt, with poor and anemic growth yearly but we can do better. I know the constant nightly merriment, fancy gated communities, bright lights and over the top high-end transportation might give the impression that we are a rich country but we are not, we just love to act rich. Let us also not fool ourselves beca...

Foreign Educated Bubble Headed Technocrats - Comparative Advantage and Free Trade

Image
One of the country’s top Economic adviser is advocating that we should do away with Food Security and open the flood gates to imports. This is what happens when we buy into the theoretical Economic Principles. We all understand the concepts and principles of Comparative Advantage and Free Trade but the devil is in the implementation. What happen to countries with too few Comparative Advantage? How do they survive or even afford imports even if it is cheaper. This leading Economic Adviser is advocating that we should not be too concern with Local Production and Food Security because protecting Local production will increase the cost of living and lower the standard of living. What he failed to realize is that without local production, we would not have local employment, unemployment would increase. Local Production increases employment and increases wealth distribution and without employment and wealth we would not have the money to even buy cheaper imports. This is why I call them...

Prosperity and Public Sector Wage Negotiation

Image
2018/2019 Budget The problem the JLP Government is having at the moment is that they are becoming victims of their own Delusional and “Illusional” Public Relation Campaign. I am sorry but you cannot walk around screaming Prosperity while still trying to implement Austerity. It is Irresponsible and disingenuous to sell people a false sense of security. The Government must get back to reality and paint that picture of reality to the people of this country and encourage them to get on board with all hands on deck. The work is not over but just beginning. The last PNP government had to face fiscal reality right out of the box after taking office in 2012, they had no choice. By the time they took office Jamaica had failed all of the previous IMF test and talks had broken down completely. As a result the IMF, World Bank and OAS circled the wagon and told Jamaica we were out of the Global financing business until we get our shit together and return to the path we agreed upon durin...

Jamaica's War on Green Space and The Environment

UPDATE: 2018-01-18 I was always opposed to Goat Island development, that plan was evil and should never have been considered. What I realized during the Goat Island protest was that a lot of people who were protesting that development was protesting it on the grounds of Partisan Politics. They became Opportunistic Environmentalist to score Partisan Political Points, hypocrites to the core.  Long before Goat Island the corporate area of Kingston and St. Andrew came under constant and destructive environmental attacks, but no one cared as most of these Opportunistic Environmentalist saw this destructive development in the corporate area as progress. These people know the price of everything and the true value of nothing. The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) declared that the provisional development order for Kingston and St Andrew now allows for 100 habitable rooms per acre in the community of Barbican, a 100 per cent increase from the specification set ...

Jamaica 2016 IMF Stand-By Arrangement

Image
2010: Stand-By Arrangement,  US$1.25 billion 2013: Extended Fund Facility,  US$932.3 million 2016: Stand-By Arrangement, US$1.64 billion Jamaica and the International Monetary Fund reached an agreement to make $1.64 billion in funding available over the next three years as the government seeks to further cut one of the world’s highest debt loads while jump-starting a sluggish economy. The stand-by agreement, announced Thursday, would make $430 million available immediately after the IMF board approves it next month. It replaces a four-year IMF loan that Jamaica took on after it restructured debt in 2013. Andrew Holness said: “Our request to move to a precautionary arrangement is a sign of strength and reflects the policy credibility and strong macroeconomic management of the Jamaican government,” “Jamaica has made commendable progress in its economic adjustment program over the past three and a half years,” said Alejandro Werner, IMF’s director for the W...

Comparing Jamaica to Singapore

Image
I always have a really good laugh whenever one of our bubble-headed technocrats compares Jamaica and Singapore. The confusion and the blame game as to why Jamaica is not as successful as Singapore is never ending because at one point in our history, Jamaica was economically ahead of Singapore.  This really had nothing to do with Jamaica but had more to do with Singapore’s history. One just need to look at the countries violent past to see where it is coming from. Then something changed - Singapore change because the people of Singapore realized that they needed to change. ONE of the world’s great economic success stories. Singapore owes much of its prosperity to a record of honest and pragmatic governments, create by the legacy of Lee Kuan Yew. When one look at the legacy of Lee Kuan Yew one clearly sees why Singapore was successful and Jamaica NOT. In the 1960s, Singapore was known for its opium dens, gang-ridden streets, fetid slums and racial tensions. Under Lee Kuan...
