The Forested Garden: What is a Food Forest?

Image
The Two Categories of the Tree Layer in a Food Forest  The understory – Smaller trees and larger shrubs such as apples, plums, cherries, peas, Cacao, Coffee etc.  The canopy layer – Taller trees that rise above the understory like Mango, breadfruit, ackee, tamarind, coconut etc.   Please note is not trying to get rid of water from the property but trying his very best to control and retain water. Yes the excess will have to go eventually but water should always be on the property.   How do we deal with mosquitoes with so much standing water? Mosquitoes do breed in water, but the larvae have to wriggle up and down to get air at the surface. That makes them perfect fish food. They won’t survive where fish is in water. The ideal spot for mosquitoes is too small for fish, something more like a muddy hoof print or little saucers under plant pots. Deal with those small bodies of water and the mosquito population will be greatly reduced. You can also design in o...

Oh Dear, What to do About the Blue Mountain Deer.

Image
In 1988 during Hurricane Gilbert it was report that some white-tailed deer escaped and ran off into the Blue Mountains. Since then the deer population has increased and it is reported that some farmers are complaining that they are eating their crops. " The deer population explosion, as some people are describing it started when a number of the animals escaped from the Somerset Falls property in Portland during the devastation caused by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. These animals fled to the wild forests of the surrounding Blue Mountains, and now there are reportedly hundreds of them roaming the region." Tag Team Chicken Fight - Free Range Chickens

Image
A rule change under the Obama Administration, required egg producers using the label “USDA Organic” to provide real outdoor space for hens, rather than enclosed porches. The Trump administration just reversed that. The only animal I feel comfortable farming are Chickens and that is because I grew up farming Chickens. It was my responsibility, to make sure they were fed and watered and to make sure they were safe and sound in their coops at nights. In the mornings before heading out to school it was my job to let them out of the coop, then feed and water them. The reaction you get in the mornings as you walk towards their coop is second to none, as they started going crazy with anticipation of being let out, to run free. Feathers fluffed and shake, some run for a dirt or sun bath, others run around flapping their wings, taking brief flight. Then after a while the hens would go back in one by one to lay their eggs. Animals need to roam, to feel free to forage for food. Happy hens wi...

Jamaica’s Lack Off Food Security

Image
Jamaica’s Food Security and safety depends on our integrity, morality, self-respect, respect for others, personal responsibility and basic human decency. We are simply at the mercy of each other, especially since our food supply system lacks a standard nationwide process to protect us. Anything can be injected into the food supply at any stage of the process and we would not know. When it comes to food import we have no control, we gave all control to the exporting country and we are totally at their mercy to eat what they want us to eat. BRASÍLIA, Brazil (AFP)  – Salmonella steaks? Carcinogenic chemicals? Lying labels? Brazil, the world's biggest beef and poultry exporter, has been hit by stomach-churning allegations of corrupt practices in its meat industry. Police have halted exports by 21 meat processers suspected of bribing inspectors to issue them bogus health certificates for rotten meat. Brazil's rotten meat scandal: what we know Jamaica's food security a s...

Jamaica’s Yearly Drought - Permaculture and Sustainability

Image
They say water is life and if that is true then water should be our top priority. Instead we can borrow Billions to build new Vanity Parliament building and new Vanity Ministry of Foreign Affairs building thanks to the Chinese, 17 Million dollar sign but still no water. It is the Year 2019 and Jamaica is still suffering from the yearly drought even though all our Political parties declare that if we vote for them they will turn wine into water.  Before the 2016 election the JLP party delivered to the people of Jamaica their 10-point plan to prosperity. Andrew Holness delivered this 10 Point Plan, like he was Moses coming down from the Mount Sinai to deliver the 10 commandments to the children of Israel. Commandment number 5 reads: “Jamaica’s water infrastructure is inadequate, we will fix it. We will make strategic capital investments in water. Jamaica is not short of water; this government does not know how to manage our water. There are still too many house...
