In 1988 during Hurricane Gilbert it was report that some white-tailed deer escaped and ran off into the Blue Mountains. Since then the deer population has increased and it is reported that some farmers are complaining that they are eating their crops. " The deer population explosion, as some people are describing it started when a number of the animals escaped from the Somerset Falls property in Portland during the devastation caused by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.
