Oh Dear, What to do About the Blue Mountain Deer.
In 1988 during Hurricane Gilbert it was report that some white-tailed deer escaped and ran off into the Blue Mountains. Since then the deer population has increased and it is reported that some farmers are complaining that they are eating their crops.
"The deer population explosion, as some people are describing it started when a number of the animals escaped from the Somerset Falls property in Portland during the devastation caused by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. These animals fled to the wild forests of the surrounding Blue Mountains, and now there are reportedly hundreds of them roaming the region."

Personally, I do not believe the Deer are impacting the farming community that much but I think some high-ranking Jamaicans are creating a story because he or she wants to turn the tide of public opinion, so they could accomplish something personal and selfish. Safari Tours anyone?
In any case I find Goats to be more invasive animals than the deer. One goat can get into your garden or on your farm and consume with glee. The only difference is, with the goats, at the end of the day, one could add some curry and my favorite white rice and consume the goat with glee while the deer is free to go off into the sunset with belly full and breed some more. I remember some Goats came into my yard and got into my Callaloo and Vegetable garden, by the time I got home nothing no left, they eat everything. They roam the streets, go where they want and eat whatever they want.
We are now reading some report of American Hunters asking the Jamaican Government permission to come to Jamaica and render the Jamaican Blue Mountain Deer population extinct. I feel it is only a matter of time before they are given permission by our Grease Palm Government to come and lick shot with glee. I only fear they will start hunting the black population as well, because I think these redneck Billy Bobs and Bubbas would shoot their own shadows because it is black and following them. I will not be shocked if our Grease Palm Government give them permission to not only hunt deer but goats and Jamaicans.
I read on TripAdvisor once an American asking if they could hunt goats in Jamaica and everyone responded, what is the fun in that. The goats are tame, not afraid of anybody and come up close to eat what you have at times out of your hand.

I cannot help but to wonder what the problem is. ONLY in Jamaica, do we look upon a quality source of ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง that taste good and treat them as Vermin.
Where we should be farming deer for protein and profit, we are talking about eliminating them. This is a business opportunity, round them up and make sure they have enough space to roam and graze and then sell/export fresh quality organic venison meat. ๐ผ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ฃ๐๐๐ง ๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐๐ข ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ ๐พ๐ช๐ง๐ง๐ฎ?
