  1. One cannot say that William Beckford was unaware of where his money came from. It is noted that he and his wife actually travelled to Jamaica where they took up residence at their Hertford Estate in Westmoreland for 13 years, between 1774 and 1787. He went to to inspect his estates that were dotted throughout the island and to supervise them in person.
